Pimaric acid is the major component of this mixture, which is a natural product obtained from the seeds of Indian pongamia trees. Pimaric acid has been shown to be effective in the treatment of symptoms caused by calcium carbonate deposition, such as myocardial infarction and pulmonary hypertension. This compound has also been found to dilate coronary arteries and inhibit platelet aggregation. The major fatty acids present in pimaric acid are myristic acid and ɣ-linolenic acid. Pimaric acid contains three different isomers: pimaroyl, octadecadienoic, and octadecatrienoic acids. The chromatographic profile for pimaric acid consists of a single spot with a retention time of approximately 7-8 minutes on a normal phase liquid chromatograph.
