1-(4-tert-Butyl-phenoxy)-propan-2-ol is a drug that is used to lower blood glucose levels in people with type II diabetes. The drug binds to the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) and inhibits the production of glucose from fatty acids and carbohydrates. This drug has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity, decrease triglycerides, and reduce weight. Pioglitazone also reduces oxidative stress by decreasing free radical formation. 1-(4-tert-Butyl-phenoxy)-propan-2-ol is administered orally with doses ranging from 5mg to 20mg taken once daily. In order to determine plasma concentrations, samples are prepared using a liquid chromatography method and analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
