2-Phenoxyphenol is a phenoxy compound that has been shown to be cytotoxic in cancer cells. It is also used as an antioxidant and antibacterial agent. 2-Phenoxyphenol is synthesized by reacting copper chloride with hydrochloric acid and phenol. This reaction produces a polymeric matrix with the 2-phenoxyphenol molecule attached to it. The 2-phenoxyphenol molecule can then be activated by electron reduction or acidic pH, which leads to fatty acid formation. These fatty acids are thought to cause autophagy through an unknown mechanism. Triclosan, a common ingredient in antibacterial soaps, has been shown to have synergistic effects with 2-phenoxyphenol when combined together in vitro, leading scientists to believe that this combination may have potential in future studies for the treatment of cancer or bacterial infections.
