9-Vinylanthracene is a fluorescent dye that can be used as an analytical tool for determining the presence of picric acid. It has been shown to be a potent light emitter, with an emission maximum at 517 nm. 9-Vinylanthracene forms hydrogen bonding interactions with other molecules and has been found to have kinetic and cationic polymerization properties. The carbonyl group on this molecule can undergo electropolymerization in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid and yields a red polymer with a molecular weight of 1000 Da. This polymer is soluble in polar solvents such as water and methanol, but insoluble in nonpolar solvents such as hexane or benzene.
