8-Methoxycoumarin is a synthetic derivative of the natural compound coumarin. It has been shown to inhibit collagen synthesis and pro-inflammatory cytokines in vitro, suggesting that it may be useful for treating inflammatory conditions such as throat or skin infections. 8-Methoxycoumarin also has strong tyrosinase inhibitory activity and melanogenesis inhibition, which could make it an effective treatment for hyperpigmentation disorders such as vitiligo. The drug can also be used to treat Alzheimer's disease, because it inhibits the production of amyloid beta peptides, which are implicated in this disease. 8-Methoxycoumarin also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to reduce pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
