5-Nitrofurfuryl alcohol is a bacteriostatic agent that inhibits the growth and multiplication of bacteria. It is an inorganic compound, which means that it does not contain carbon atoms. Its functional groups are nitro and -OH groups. 5-Nitrofurfuryl alcohol has been shown to be active against staphylococci and other bacteria, such as alginic acid, which can cause bladder infections. This drug also inhibits the synthesis of proteins in bacteria by binding to the ribosomes of the bacterial cell membrane and inhibiting protein synthesis. 5-Nitrofurfuryl alcohol binds to chloride ions or sodium hydroxide solution (alkali) to form a nitrite ion, which then reacts with water to form nitrous acid. Nitrous acid reacts with amino acids in proteins, leading to the formation of nitrate, ammonia, and water. Nitrate is toxic for cells because it blocks cellular respiration by reacting with oxygen molecules
