1,2-Bis(trichlorosilyl)ethane is a monolayer-forming compound that can be used as a corrosion inhibitor and an additive in paint. It is used to protect metals from the effects of moisture, oxygen, and atmospheric pollution. 1,2-Bis(trichlorosilyl)ethane is able to form a film with hydrophilic interactions between the molecules of the coating material. This film reacts with chloride ions present in water to form a gel that seals the surface of the metal against corrosion. 1,2-Bis(trichlorosilyl)ethane also has some cross-linking properties that make it effective for polyester resins and polyvinyl chloride films. It also reacts with functional groups on organic surfaces such as methyl ethyl ketone (MEK).
