3,4-Dimethoxythioanisole is a reactive oxygen species that can be produced by many different routes. In the simplest case, 3,4-dimethoxythioanisole can be formed by direct photolysis of thiophene with UV light. The reaction is initiated by a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism in which the sulfoxide group of 3,4-dimethoxythioanisole reacts with the nucleophilic radical cation generated from photolysis of thiophene to form an adduct. Mechanistic studies have been carried out to determine how this reaction proceeds and what factors affect its rate. It has been found that the reaction rate increases when more cations are present and decreases with increasing concentration of radical anions and decreasing temperature.
3,4-Dimethoxythioanisole also reacts with sulfides to form sulfoxides, which can then react with nucleoph
