L-Proline Methyl Ester (LPME) is a metabolic intermediate that is synthesized from L-proline and methyl alcohol. It is produced by the enzyme racemase, which converts L-proline to an equal mixture of L- and D- proline. The biological properties of LPME have been studied in a model system using Escherichia coli as the host organism. In this model, LPME was shown to inhibit the activity of several enzymes, including esterase and aminopeptidase. In addition, it has been shown to have receptor activity and to be able to bind toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). This property may explain its ability to inhibit hepatitis infections.
LPME has also been shown to inhibit replication of DNA viruses such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) and adenovirus type 5 (Ad5). Moreover, it can inhibit replication of RNA viruses such
