Stearyl palmitate is a cationic surfactant that is used in pharmaceutical preparations. The hydroxyl group on the stearyl moiety can form a complex with copper ions, which are used to combat microbial infections. Stearyl palmitate has also been shown to inhibit matrix metalloproteinase activity and promote wound healing.
