2,3,5,6-Tetramethylbenzoic acid (TMB) is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents and slightly soluble in water. It is used as a precursor for the manufacture of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and other organic compounds. TMB has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the use of malonic acid as a substrate. The active site of TMB is acidic and it has been shown to catalyse the reaction between malonic acid and carbon tetrachloride with a dipole moment. TMB also interacts with functional groups such as methylene chloride, chloroform, methanol and benzene.
