Methyl 2-(triphenylphosphoranylidene)propanoate is a chemical compound with the molecular formula CH3OCH2(CH2)3P(=O)(O-CH2C6H5)CHO. It is the methyl ester of triphenylphosphoranylideneacetic acid and it is used to prepare metaperiodate. Methyl 2-(triphenylphosphoranylidene)propanoate is prepared by hydrolyzing an aldehyde, such as acetaldehyde, with sodium methoxide in methanol to form an epoxide, which in turn reacts with phosphoryl chloride to form the desired product. The yield of this reaction is high because the carbonyl group undergoes olefination and lysis reactions during the reaction process.
