2,6-Dimethyl-trans-2,6-octadiene is a reactive chemical that can induce apoptotic cell death. It has been shown to have activation properties with a mechanism that may be mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The apoptosis induced by 2,6-dimethyl-trans-2,6-octadiene is characterized by DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation. Additives such as costunolide can inhibit the induction of apoptosis in cells treated with 2,6-dimethyl-trans-2,6-octadiene. The cytometric analysis of these cells showed that they had an increased number of cells in the G2/M phase and decreased numbers in the G0/G1 phase.
