3-Isothiocyanatopropyl)benzene is a hydrogen-bond acceptor and is an intermediate in the synthesis of isothiocyanates. It binds to DNA by nucleophilic attack, forming covalent bonds with the nitrogen atom, which inhibits transcription and replication. 3-Isothiocyanatopropyl)benzene has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells activated by chemical carcinogens or ionizing radiation. It also inhibits the development of cancer in other tissues such as colon, stomach, breast, liver, and lung. This compound may have potential as a chemopreventive agent for bowel disease and inflammatory bowel disease due to its ability to inhibit inflammation in cell culture. 3-Isothiocyanatopropyl)benzene can be found in cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli.
