Meso-1,2,3,4-Tetrabromobutane is a nitronium cation that is produced by the oxidation of butenyl nitryl chloride. The evolution of the nitronium cation is dependent on the constants of the reaction and the reactants. The oxidation process can be carried out in two ways: transfer or direct addition. In either case, vinyl groups are transferred to oxygen to give an unstable product with a dihedral angle of 180°. Thermal analysis has shown that solvents such as ethylene will react with meso-1,2,3,4-tetrabromobutane to form nitroethane and 2-chloropropene.
