N-tert-Butyl-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide is a cationic dye that fluoresces in the presence of anions. The dye exhibits centrosymmetry and has been shown to form dimers when interacting with anions. This dye has been used as a reagent for the fluorimetric detection of benzoic acid and sulfonamides. N-tert-Butyl-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide is also capable of binding to hydrogen bonds, which are weak interactions that exist between hydrogen and other atoms or molecules. The compound is soluble in organic solvents, such as acetone and chloroform, but insoluble in water.
