N,N-Dimethyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-amine is a heterocyclic compound that is a benzimidazole derivative. It has been shown to inhibit HIV replication in vitro and in vivo by competitive inhibition of the virus's reverse transcriptase enzyme. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit the production of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) proteins in infected cells and to decrease viral load. N,N-Dimethyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-amine also exhibits anti-cancer activity in vitro against prostate cancer cells and leukemia cells. It inhibits the production of DNA and RNA by inhibiting the enzyme DNA polymerase. This leads to cell death by apoptosis because there are no new cells being produced.
