1,2-Dimethylbenzimidazole is a reactive compound that has minimal toxicity. It can be used in vitro to study the cytotoxic activity of drugs and in vivo as a probe for the activation of G proteins. 1,2-Dimethylbenzimidazole is useful for the study of cancer cells because it can be activated by UV irradiation or visible light. The photophysical properties of this compound have been investigated using nmr spectroscopy and in vitro cytotoxicity assays. The tautomers are also known to react with mercaptals, which are used as protective groups during chemical synthesis.
