N-Benzyl-2-bromoacetamide (NBBAA) is an antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to proton and nitrogen atoms in the active site of bacterial enzymes. NBBAA has potent antibacterial activity against a wide range of Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Bacillus subtilis. It also has antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum. NBBAA binds to the amide group of amino acids at the active site of enzyme ribonucleotide reductase, thereby inhibiting DNA synthesis by preventing the formation of new DNA strands. The mechanism for this inhibition is not yet fully understood but may involve coordination chemistry with the metal ion tetraethylammonium.
