Dimethyl Phenylphosphonite (DMPP) is a chemical compound that contains trimethyl, a metal carbonyl group, and hydroxyl group. It is an organophosphorus compound that inhibits the growth factor epidermal growth factor (EGF). DMPP binds to the EGF receptor on cell membranes and prevents activation of the EGF receptor by its ligand. This inhibition of signaling through the EGF receptor leads to decreased cell proliferation and inhibition of tumor growth. DMPP also has inhibitory properties against other proteins that contain hydroxyl groups such as x-ray diffraction data and light exposure. The reaction mechanism of DMPP is nucleophilic addition. The carbonyl group acts as an electron donor, while the hydroxyl group acts as an electron acceptor in this nucleophilic addition reaction.
