1,3,5,8-Tetrahydroxyxanthone is a Chinese herb that has been used to treat diabetes. The chemical structure of 1,3,5,8-tetrahydroxyxanthone is similar to the xanthones found in grapefruit juice and other citrus fruits. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties and inhibit oxidative injury by scavenging reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anion. Tetrahydroxyxanthone may also be useful for the treatment of diseases with an inflammatory component such as Crohn’s disease because it increases the production of growth factors such as β1 which may decrease inflammation. Tetrahydroxyxanthone can be extracted from acetate using preparative HPLC or from dextran sulfate using LC-MS/MS.
