Ferrous stearate is a sodium salt of ferrous iron, which is used as an ingredient in pharmaceutical preparations. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by reacting with the water in the reaction solution to form hydrogen gas. Ferrous stearate may be used as a thermal expansion agent in biotechnology and as a biological property enhancer for vaccines and other pharmaceuticals. Ferrous stearate also has antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals or chelate metal ions that could otherwise react with oxygen, lipid peroxidation, or DNA damage.
