2-(1H-Imidazol-2-yl)pyrimidine is a pyrimidine compound that has demonstrated antiviral potency against human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and murine leukemia virus (MLV). It is orally active and inhibits the growth of cancer cells. 2-(1H-Imidazol-2-yl)pyrimidine binds to cellular receptors and blocks the binding site for chemokines, which are proteins that attract white blood cells to an area of inflammation. This selective activity may be due to its ability to bind to cavities on the surface of mammalian cells. 2-(1H-Imidazol-2-yl)pyrimidine also has antifungal activity, inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum.
