2,5-Dichloro-3,6-dimethylpyrazine is a reactive chlorine atom that can be used to deoxygenate various organic compounds. It reacts with the alkoxide ion to form an intermediate alkoxide radical, which then reacts with the oxidized compound to form a new organic product. 2,5-Dichloro-3,6-dimethylpyrazine reacts with chlorinated compounds such as trifluoroperacetic acid and chlorine gas to produce dichloromethyltrifluoroperacetic acid and dichloromethylchlorocarbanilic acid respectively.
