Mucidermin is a natural product that is isolated from the fungus Chaetomium sp. It has been shown to increase mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase activity, as well as transcriptional regulation of other genes involved in energy production. Mucidermin has also been shown to have biological properties, such as reducing nitrite reductase and p-hydroxybenzoic acid levels, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the binding of fatty acids with these enzymes. Mucidermin has also been shown to inhibit the growth of resistant mutants in a model system for mitochondria.
