2-Amino-4-phenoxybutanoic acid is an inhibitor of the enzyme s-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM) methyltransferase. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of viruses, such as HIV, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1), and influenza virus. The effect of 2-Amino-4-phenoxybutanoic acid on these viruses is due to its ability to inhibit the enzymatic reaction that produces methyl groups for viral DNA synthesis. This compound also inhibits nitric oxide synthase and may have therapeutic potential in treating diseases related to nitric oxide synthase, such as Parkinson's disease. 2-Amino-4-phenoxybutanoic acid has low toxicity and is an enantiopure compound.
