Product Information
4-Methoxy-2-methylbenzyl alcohol is a photosensitizer that is used in the polymerization of polyester resins. It reacts with oxygen to produce singlet oxygen, which can initiate polymerization by abstracting an electron from the double bond in the monomer. This compound is activated as an electrophile and reacts with alkyl groups on the surface of formaldehyde to produce methacrylate esters and alcohols. The product then undergoes a transfer mechanism, whereby it transfers this activated double bond to other molecules, such as tetrahydrofuran or butyllithium. In this way, 4-methoxy-2-methylbenzyl alcohol can be used for crosslinking polymers.
