Terphenyllin is a natural compound that has been shown to have anticancer activity against prostate cancer cells. Terphenyllin inhibits the growth of cancer by disrupting the synthesis of proteins and DNA. It also has an inhibitory effect on bacterial strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli, which are implicated in many drug-resistant infections. Terphenyllin is derived from endophytic fungus found in the leaves of plants. The molecule consists of three phenyl rings with two methoxy groups, and its nmr spectra show signals for each ring. A tyrosinase activity assay shows that terphenyllin has an inhibitory effect on tyrosinase enzyme activity, which is important for melanogenesis (pigmentation). The etoac extract from the plant species Alseodaphne semecarpifolia contains terphenyllin.
