Mesityleneruthenium(II) Chloride Dimer is a reagent that can be used for transfer hydrogenation reactions. It is also used as a catalyst for asymmetric hydrogenation reactions to produce chiral alcohols, amino acids and amines. Mesityleneruthenium(II) Chloride Dimer is stable at room temperature and does not decompose at any temperature up to about 350°C.
Mesitylene reacts with elemental hydrogen to form mesitylenesulfonic acid which then reacts with ruthenium metal to form an organometallic complex of ruthenium hydride, which is then reduced by chloride ions to form the dimer. The diels-alder reaction between
