It reacts with carbon disulfide and ethylenediamine to form a catalytic intermediate. This intermediate is then reacted with hydrazine and orthoformate to produce the final product. 3-Amino-4,6-dimethylthieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carbonitrile has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against heterocycles and cyclocondensation reactions.
