(E)-3-(5-Nitrofuran-2-yl)acrylaldehyde is an activated electrophile that induces genotoxic effects in the liver of mice. It has been shown to induce DNA adducts, which may be due to its ability to form hydrophobic condensation products with DNA. (E)-3-(5-Nitrofuran-2-yl)acrylaldehyde also induces cytotoxicity and apoptosis, which is mediated by the ubiquitin-proteasome system. (E)-3-(5-Nitrofuran-2-yl)acrylaldehyde is a fluorophore that can be detected using fluorescence microscopy or phosphorus oxychloride.
