Product Information
2-Hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbonitrile is a nitro compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It has predictable antibacterial activity, which is due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme nitroreductase. 2-Hydroxynaphthalene-1-carbonitrile inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to chloride ions in the cell membrane and preventing their transport across the membrane. This leads to a decrease in the concentration of chloride ions inside and outside of the cell, which prevents bacterial growth. 2HNC binds to host cells by reacting with free amino groups on proteins and forms covalent adducts with cellular macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins.
2HNC is not orally active because it undergoes rapid hydrolysis in the stomach, but it can be administered intravenously or topically.
