5-Acetoxy-2-bromo-1,4-naphthoquinone (5ABNQ) is a research compound that has anticancer activity. It is synthesized from 2,5-dibromo-1,4-naphthoquinone and acetyl chloride in the presence of sodium acetate. 5ABNQ is a racemic mixture of two diastereoisomers: 5-(1′R)-acetoxy-2-(5′S)-bromo-1,4 -naphthoquionone and 5-(1′S)-acetoxy-2-(5′R)-bromo-1,4 -naphthoquionone. This compound has shown anticancer activity against breast cancer cells as well as other types of cancers. The target compound is believed to work by inhibiting the production of proteins important for cell division and growth in cancer cells.
