3-acetamidopropane-1-sulfonic acid is the active metabolite of naltrexone. It inhibits 5-HT2 receptors and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction. However, its optimum concentration for receptor activity has not yet been determined. 3-acetamidopropane-1-sulfonic acid also has inhibitory properties on glutamate release from neurons, which may be due to its ability to block NMDA receptors. 3-acetamidopropane-1-sulfonic acid can be used as a microdialysis probe for brain functions and is an analytical method for measuring concentrations of other drugs in biological fluids. The drug is used as pharmacological treatment for metabolic disorders, such as chronic renal failure, diabetes mellitus, and hepatitis C infection. It can also be used as pharmacological agents in geriatric patients with dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
