Pipequaline is a quinoline derivative that inhibits the activity of the herpes simplex virus by binding to its receptor. This drug has been shown to have anxiolytic effects in animals, which may be due to its ability to bind benzodiazepine receptors and increase levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. Pipequaline has also been shown to have an effect on locomotor activity, but does not interact with alpha-acid glycoprotein or α1-acid glycoprotein. It has been demonstrated that pipequaline reduces the severity of seizures when administered during an experimental model of epilepsy.
Pipequaline is an experimental drug that has not yet been approved for use in humans.
