(S)-2-(hydroxymethyl)hexanoic acid ee is a chiral compound that can be prepared by reacting a carbon source with an inorganic salt. The reaction time is optimized for a particular strain of bacteria and the reaction products are analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It has been shown to be an effective soil biocontrol agent against several bacterial strains, such as Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. This compound also inhibits the growth of fungi such as Aspergillus niger and Penicillium notatum.
