N-Palmitoyl (d31)D-sphingosine is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of cancer cell growth. This compound binds to the enzymatic activity of sphingosine kinase and blocks the production of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P). S1P is an important cellular signaling molecule that regulates many biological functions, including proliferation and differentiation. Inhibition of S1P synthesis leads to decreased cancer cell proliferation and increased apoptosis. N-Palmitoyl (d31)D-sphingosine also inhibits the endoplasmic reticulum stress response in cancer cells. The anti-cancer effects of this compound are mediated by its ability to inhibit protein synthesis with multiple targets, including eukaryotic initiation factors 4A (eIF4A), ribonucleotide reductase M2 subunit, and methionyl aminopeptidase.
