2-Benzyl-2,7-diazaspiro[3.5]nonane is a compound that has shown significant efficacy in the treatment of tuberculosis in mice. The 2-benzyl moiety is believed to be responsible for this activity and it has been shown that the benzyl group is an important moiety in antitubercular drugs. This molecule also possesses multidrug resistance profiles, which may be due to its methyl group and symmetric structure. In vitro studies have found that 2-benzyl-2,7-diazaspiro[3.5]nonane inhibits mycobacterium tuberculosis growth by binding to the enzyme mycolic acid synthase and preventing the synthesis of mycolic acid, a major component of the cell wall of M. tuberculosis.
