Chroman-8-carbaldehyde is a metabolite of α-tocopherol, which is a natural antioxidant found in the human body. It has been shown to have an antioxidant function by inhibiting lipid peroxidation, scavenging free radicals and reactive oxygen species, and catalyzing the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Chroman-8-carbaldehyde also has an inhibitory effect on the enzymes that are involved in the metabolic transition of α-tocopherol from one form to another. This may be due to its covalent binding to amino acid residues on these enzymes, leading to changes in stereochemical configurations and hydrophobic interactions with functional groups.
