Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase isozyme L1 (UCHL1) belongs to the peptidase C12 family. This enzyme is a thiol protease that hydrolyses peptide bonds at the C-terminal glycine of ubiquitin. The gene encoding the UCHL1 protein is specifically expressed in neurons and in cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system. Mutations in the UCHL1 gene are often associated with Parkinson disease. Recent studies have linked UCHL1 expression and inflammation- inflammation regulates UCHL1 expression, and it is this regulatory mechanism that may be involved in the progression of Parkinson disease.
