Neostenine is a medicine that inhibits the activity of protostemonine, which is a toxin produced by the protozoan genus tuberosa. Protostemonine has been shown to inhibit intestinal caco-2 cells in laboratory studies. Neostenine is synthesized by skeleton rearrangement of synthetic stemofuran and can be used for the treatment of intestinal diseases. Neostenine has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on ileal and jejunal contractions in animal studies, as well as on visceral pain in human clinical trials. Neostenine has also been shown to inhibit bacterial growth and proliferation in vitro.
