Azelastine is a nonsedating antihistamine that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria. It is available for oral administration as tablets or capsules. Azelastine does not cross the blood-brain barrier and does not cause sedation, making it an ideal agent for pediatric use. Azelastine has also been shown to be useful in treating autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It has been used in clinical doses from 5-10mg/day, with a maximum daily dose of 20 mg. Azelastine is used to diagnose allergies by measuring the amount of histamine released into the bloodstream after exposure to an allergen. This drug also exhibits anticancer properties by inhibiting tumor growth and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells.
