Description:

G-CSF is a glycoprotein that belongs to the cytokine family and is used as a medication. It stimulates the production of neutrophils, which are important in defending the body against infections. G-CSF also has a role in stimulating stem cell production and can be used to treat cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. G-CSF binds to receptors on the surface of cells, activating intracellular signaling pathways. The binding of G-CSF to its receptor activates phospholipase C (PLC), which hydrolyzes phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) into two second messengers: inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG). IP3 causes release of calcium from intracellular stores, leading to an increase in cytosolic free calcium concentration. DAG activates protein kinase C (PKC)
