2-Oxo-2H-pyran-3-carboxylic acid (OPCA) is a stereoselective and high yielding decarboxylated primary amino acid. It is used for the synthesis of chiral pharmaceuticals, including medicines that treat diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disorders. OPCA can also be used in kinetic studies to determine the rate of reactions catalyzed by organocatalysts. This compound has been shown to activate the chiral catalytic reactions of carbonyl compounds.
