Tributylmethylammonium iodide (TBAI) is a quaternary ammonium compound that can reversibly bind to the anionic sites on the surface of actin filaments. It has been shown to inhibit the transport properties of cellulose and to disrupt mitochondrial membrane potential. TBAI also reacts with metal hydroxides, such as magnesium hydroxide, in aqueous solution to produce ionic TBAI+ ions. It has been used as an x-ray crystallographic probe for studying metal hydroxides and water vapor uptake by porous materials. TBAI is taken up by cells via the p-glycoprotein (p-gp) substrate, which is a transporter protein found in the plasma membrane. TBAI is also used as a hydrogen bond donor and methanol solvent with FTIR spectroscopy for studying ATP-dependent transport across cell membranes.
