Description:

Titanium dioxide has a variety of uses due to its photocatalytic properties, which allow it to generate free radicals in the presence of light. Titanium dioxide is used as a catalyst in organic reactions and as an additive in paints and plastics. Titanium dioxide can be prepared by reacting titanium chloride with magnesium or sodium hydroxide at high temperatures. The resultant titanium hydroxide (titanium(IV) oxide) can then be calcined to form an anatase phase. Titanium dioxide particles are typically spherical and exhibit high surface area, which leads to increased catalytic activity. In addition, titanium dioxide has been shown to have photocatalytic activity, producing high values when exposed to ultraviolet light.
