4-Amino-2,3-xylenol is an oxidation product of acetaminophen and is a cytosolic protein. It has been shown to have cytotoxic effects in vitro on cells, specifically on the neonatal rat brain. 4-Amino-2,3-xylenol has also been shown to be a metabolite of lignocaine in vivo and may contribute to the drug's cardiotoxic effects. The metabolism of 4-amino-2,3-xylenol is mediated by hepatic S9 fractions and HPLC analysis. This metabolite can be detected in urine after administration of acetaminophen or lignocaine.
