p-Nitrobenzyl iodide is an organic compound that is used as an alkylating agent. It reacts with amino groups in proteins by substitution of the nitrogen atom with a methylene group. This reaction requires the presence of glutathione, which acts as a cofactor and provides a chloride ion to facilitate the formation of the reactive intermediate. p-Nitrobenzyl iodide also binds covalently to DNA and causes cross-linking, leading to inhibition of DNA replication and transcription. p-Nitrobenzyl iodide has been shown to have inhibitory effects on mycocerosic activity in vitro and in vivo.
