It is an optical and magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent with malignant properties. The mechanism of action is thought to be due to its ability to bind to DNA and RNA, leading to cell death. 3-(1-Phenylethyl)-3H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid has been shown in vitro and in vivo studies to have anti-tumour activity against prostate cancer cells, which may be due to its inhibition of protein synthesis or induction of apoptosis.
