Tetracyanoethylene oxide is a nucleophilic compound that reacts with electrophiles to form adducts. The active methylene group in TCEO is nucleophilic and attacks the C-C bond of ethyl diazoacetate to form an intermediate, which then reacts with chloride ion to yield ethyl chloroacetate. This reaction can be catalyzed by hydrochloric acid or by sulfoxides. The chemical structure of TCEO is an oxide of tetracyanoethylene, which has been shown to have light-emitting properties. It has a nonpolar solvent character and shows no reactivity towards water.
